Mathematics
Our intent is to design a mathematics curriculum that is accessible to all children, and enables success regardless of background or ability. Through careful planning and engaging learning experiences all children should have the ability to master the knowledge needed to apply fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics, reason mathematically following a line of enquiry and solve problems by applying their mathematics to routine and non routine problems with increasing sophistication in their learning. We ensure that as pupils move through the programmes of study they are afforded opportunities to consolidate their understanding through additional practice, retrieval activities to embed long-term memory and targeted teaching. Where pupils rapidly grasp concepts our curriculum provides challenge through a range of complex problems and opportunities to further develop these skills.
Through our use of technology, we enhance the learning of multiplication tables while fostering heightened engagement both within the school environment and at home. At the forefront of this initiative lies our integration of Times Table Rock Stars, an online platform designed to strengthen students' multiplication skills while making learning enjoyable. Additionally, our students benefit from access to digital manipulatives available on their Chromebooks, further enhancing their mathematical understanding and proficiency.
We use the White Rose Maths scheme of work to guide our teaching approach. Our Schemes of Learning (SOL) meticulously map out yearly frameworks, delineating weekly objectives aligned with the National Curriculum. These frameworks are crafted to facilitate mastery of mathematical concepts while fostering an enjoyable, engaging, and diverse learning experience.
White Rose Maths offers an array of resources tailored to meet the needs of every learner. Through a blend of pictorial, practical, and written methods, students are guided towards an understanding of mathematical principles, bolstering their confidence and competence in the subject.
Central to our approach is the cultivation of fluency in mathematics, equipping students with a robust numerical intuition. This fluency empowers them to adeptly select and apply the most suitable methods for any given problem, enabling seamless application across various contexts. By nurturing fluency, we ensure that students not only grasp mathematical concepts but also develop the agility to utilise their skills effectively in real-world scenarios.
Throughout our teaching we expose pupils to the language of mathematics and the application of it to daily life. We ensure that children have a broad mathematical vocabulary and are able to explain their mathematical reasoning with confidence to support their learning and present mathematical justification, argument or proof.
Pupils are enabled to make rich connections across a range of concepts and curriculum subjects, and apply these to everyday life in school and beyond. By developing these links we enable children to develop curiosity about the subject. Our Curriculum Drivers of growth mindset, community, environment and language development underpin every aspect of mathematics, are embedded in teaching and learning and develop the child as a whole. We enable our pupils to develop financial literacy, become critical scientists and confident with technology, and to use these skills to become active citizens who make positive contributions to society.
End points for maths
At Grange Park, we have introduced the White Rose scheme of learning that is used in every year group. It is an award-winning system for teaching and learning mathematics to young learners. It has been developed in accordance with the UK education system by a team of mathematicians who have spent years developing innovative ways to teach mathematics.
The White Rose Maths curriculum is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in mathematics. Students will gain a deep understanding of mathematics and enjoy solving mathematical problems with this course. The primary curriculum puts a significant emphasis on mathematical skills and curriculum content has to be well sequenced in order to promote a depth of understanding. The White Rose resources are well suited to curriculum integration and achieving these targets.
This program is not just about teaching maths, it is about developing mathematical thinking skills. The aim of this program is to ensure that students are able to think mathematically and solve problems with confidence.
"Our aim is for young mathematicians to become:
Confident and able to recall and apply mathematical knowledge in different contexts
Able to explain their methods and thinking processes and apply skills in context
Fluent in different areas of maths
Efficient in applying problem-solving and reasoning skills
Independent thinkers
Aware of the Maths/ concepts/ process they are doing
